579,053. Electromagnetic clutches. WINTHER, M. P. Sept. 26, 1942, No. 13546. Convention date, April 13. [Class 35] Eddy-current machines are air-cooled by providing the rotary armature drum 7 with peripheral V-shaped grooves and fins 21, and a series of stationary baffle members 25 with projections extending into the grooves whereby air is drawn into the grooves at one side of a baffle member and ejected at the opposite side of the next one. Preferably, the sides of the grooves are roughened to promote the air circulation. Where the arrangement of the exciting coils is such as to form a curved fluxcontaining region as in Fig. 4, the depth of the grooves is varied to correspond, preferably by making the grooves in groups of different depths. The drum is carried from a driven shaft by a spider 5, and the field system is mounted on the driven shaft, being kept in alignment with the driver by a bearing thereon. A multicoil machine is described with reference to Fig. 5 (not shown), in which the magnetic flux produced by the coils is alternately in opposite directions.
