Abstract
578,862. Aircraft. MALINOWSKI, S. W. April 17, 1944, No. 7085. [Class 4] A rigid connection between a tug plane and trailer comprises one or more universal joints or hinges which either of themselves control the control surfaces of the trailer, or are so arranged with intercoupling of the control surfaces of the tug plane and trailer, that the trailer automatically adopts the angle of flight corresponding to the speed of the tug plane, whilst being free to move in either a vertical or a vertical and a horizontal plane with respect to the tug. Due to such connection, when the trailer moves out of alignment with the tug plane the control surfaces of the trailer may be operated automatically by rods, wires, gear wheels, or other mechanism to return the tug plane to its correct attitude, or the pilot may operate the control surfaces of both machines simultaneously. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a trailer comprising two booms 1, 2, and a rear wing 5 is articulated at points A to a tug plane 7, lateral movement of the trailer being prevented by tie members 6. The rudders 3, 4, of the trailer are moved by the pilot simultaneously with the rudder 10 of the tug plane. In the form according to Fig. 2 the trailer is allowed free vertical and horizontal movement with respect to the tug plane by means of two beams 1, 2, universally attached at A to the tug plane and through vertical hinges B to the trailer wing 5, the control surfaces of the trailer being operated automatically upon displacement of the trailer relatively to the tug. In further constructions the tug and trailer planes are directly connected together by universal joints or through a rigid boom.
