Abstract

578,373. Casting crank-shafts. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Feb. 25, 1943, No. 3140. Convention date, Feb. 25, 1942. [Class 83 (i) Moulds; moulding processes; mould jackets.- A mould for casting two multi-throw crankshafts comprises adjacent stacks each containing superimposed baked core-sands 15, 17, 18, 31, Figs. 5-8, with central and eccentric openings 19, 16 through them, the plates 17, 18, 31 also having depressions 20 on their faces in communication with the opening 19 and extending in different directions and all the plates having edge notches 24 which align when the plates are assembled and co-operate to form a pouring sprue 44, Fig. 1. The central openings 19 define the shaft bearings, the openings 16 define the throws 13, the depressions 20 define the webs 21. The plates 15, 17, 18 and 31 are placed successively and in desired angular position, according to the design of shaft desired, in a metal frame, comprising a base 32 and rods 33, after a runner plate 25 and shaft end plates 23, 18<1> have been placed therein, the rods 33 engaging the outermost notches 24. End plates 17<1>, 22 a plate 28, with funnel 29 and vents 30, and a metal plate 34 are then added and the whole clamped by wedges 36. If desired, the whole or part of the mould is enclosed in hinged jacket parts 37, 38, 40, 42, Fig. 2, secured by clamps 43. The plates 17<1> and 18<1>, Fig. 1, have each a central hole 19 and a single depression to define the end crank web. The advantages described in Specification 429,576 may be obtained by appropriately shaping these plates.
