429,576. Casting crank shafts. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd., 88, Regent Street, London. Feb. 5, 1935, No. 3746. Convention date, Feb. 5, 1934. [Class 83 (i)] Moulding processes ; moulds ; guiding moulds.-In casting alloy-steel and other crank shafts, distortions, produced in cooling, are corrected by giving the mould cavity a shape distorted in the opposite directions. The mould comprises a number of superposed plates 2-16 having four casting cavities and a central runner 24, this being connected to a pouring gate 29 by a strainer 28 and passage 26, and to the cavities C by gates 23. Each plate 2, 4, &c. is aligned with that immediately above by a triangular projection 32 engaging a corresponding recess 33 and with that below by a plug 35, Fig. 5, of sand engaging corresponding holes 34. To avoid porosity in the lower main bearing 17, Fig. 1, a mecal slug 31 is cast in. Mould jackets.-To avoid bursting of the mould at the lower counterbalance-weight cavity 19, a band 36 with pads 37, Fig. 2, is clamped about the mould.
