Abstract
The abrasive grain of the parent Specification comprising a -alumina containing chromium sesquioxide and/or vanadium sesquioxide in solid solution therewith, is modified in that the solid solution also contains titanium atoms in the lattice thereof and that the Cr2O3 and/or V2O3 may be replaced by Fe2O3 or Mn2O3 and further that the abrasive grain is only produced by sintering of the mixed materials for producing the said solid solutions. The isomorphous oxides themselves may be used in the preparation of the abrasive grain or materials may be used which under the conditions of the process form such oxides. Thus titanium dioxide is specified. Using the latter with a -alumina and any of the above specified oxides a sintering temperature of 1700 DEG -2000 DEG C. is used. The sintered mass is then crushed to form abrasive grain which may be bonded or the mass may be formed as a shaped article.
