Abstract

Cellular resinous materials are obtained by mixing a urea-formaldehyde condensation syrup with a modified hardener consisting of an aniline-formaldehyde resin and an acid or acid-forming, hardening agent or catalyst, and heating the mixture. The aniline-formaldehyde condensation product may be mixed with hydrochloric acid to form a gel which is then mixed with the syrup, or powdered aniline-formaldehyde resin may be mixed into an aqueous paste with ammonium chloride and the paste stirred into the syrup. Thus, a modified hardener prepared by stirring powdered aniline-formaldehyde resin, prepared as described in Specification 540,442, into an aqueous solution of ammonium chloride, is admixed with a urea-formaldehyde condensation syrup prepared as described in Specification 545,409, the liquid mixture may be simultaneously expanded and hardened by heating at once or may be allowed to set to an apparently solid mass which is subsequently heated; the heating step may be postponed for some weeks. Fillers, e.g. wood flour or slate dust, and plasticisers, e.g. tricresyl phosphate, may be added. The cellulose material may be formed between two or more sheets of woody material, e.g. plywood or veneer, to produce sandwich panels.
