Abstract

578,132. Making rivets. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., COOPER, B. P., and GADD, R. O. March 30, 1944, No. 5857. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Forging-dies; flanging.-Tubular rivets, such as those employed in '' blind riveting," have the flanged head thinned after trimming to produce either a countersink or a domed head. A tubular rivet stamped from sheet aluminium or nickel alloy with flange 7, Fig. 1, at right angles to the axis, is placed in a die 9, Fig. 2, flared at 15 and acted on by a die 11 having a pilot 17 with rounded end leading by a conical portion 19 to a flat surface 21. The part 19 first bends the flange to the shape shown and then the surface 21 acts on the raised edge to produce the desired thinning and restore the top surface to a plane perpendicular to the axis. As applied to a domed head, the die 11 is replaced by a die in which the conical surface extends to the full diameter of the die. If desired, the angle of the cone may differ from that in the bottom die to produce a thinning of the flange at the same time as it is bent or the two operations may be effected separately. The head is finished by dies 39, 43, the latter having a clearance groove at 47 so that the edge of the rivet is further thinned whilst imparting the domed shape. Specifications 378,431, 504,928 and 558,156, [Group VII], are referred to.
