Abstract

Ethyl cellulose plastic compositions, suitable for the manufacture of moulded articles, films, lacquers or varnishes, are rendered stable to the effects of heat, ultra-violet light, and outdoor weathering by incorporating therein one or more phenols with a carbon linkage para-substituent and an oxygen linkage ortho-substituent. Suitable phenolic compounds are eugenol, vanillin, vanillyl alcohol, syringic acid, gallic acid, para-tertiary-butyl-catechol, benzyl catechol, hexyl catechol, protocatechuic acid and esters of syringic, gallic and protocatechuic acids. Plasticisers such as tributyl phosphate, tricresylphosphate, triphenylphosphate, dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, diamyl phthalate, diphenyl phthalate, vegetable oil fatty acids, fatty alcohols such as lauryl alcohol, vegetable oils such as linseed oil, and resins such as wood rosin, dammar, cumar, as well as fillers, pigments and colouring matter may be added to the composition. Specifications 431,964 and 440,364 are referred to.
