Abstract

Gases containing unsaturated hydrocarbons are treated with sulphuric acid of 20-96 per cent in stages in counter-current, the stages being at successively increasing temperatures, the same acid being used throughout without separation of products at individual stages. After separation of liquid polymers, if any, the acid liquor is treated with up to an equal weight of water or steam and distilled, the liquid polymers being added to the distillate to produce a high octane number blending liquid. In examples: (1) gas from the drag distillation of tarbanite is treated with sulphuric acid of 63 DEG B<\>ae at which at entry is at 65 DEG C. and the same acid is cooled to 50 DEG and 35 DEG C. respectively for the earlier gas treatment stages; polymers are separated, and 0.4 volumes of water are added and the mixture distilled, the separated polymers being added to the distillate and the mixture distilled to 200 DEG C.; (2) gas from low temperature carbonization of bituminous coal is treated with sulphuric acid of 55 DEG B<\>ae, the temperatures being 110 DEG , 60 DEG and 15 DEG C., the further stages being similar to the first example, but the final distillation is to 180 DEG C.; 15 per cent of the product added to petrol raises the octane number from 72 to 80.
