Abstract

577,651. Bombs. WILLIAMS, G. H. R. April 5, 1944, Nos. 6397 and 18300. [Class 9 (i)] A bomb tail comprises a cone 10 and fins 15 which extend beyond the apex of the cone but can be retracted to be within the overall length of the bomb to economise in storage space. The fins are held retracted by a pin 21 and are extended when the bomb is dropped from an aircraft by a spring 20, the pin being withdrawn by connection to the aircraft or it is sheared by air pressure on the fins. The cone comprises an inner tube 12 and this tube and the cone are provided with slots which act as guides for the fins. Discs 18 are secured to the top and bottom of the webs 16, uniting the fins 15, and are a sliding fit in the tube 12. A ring 19 surrounds the fins. A spring-pressed shutter 40 closes the slots in the cone. A cone is shown made of four quarter conical sections welded together with distance pieces between to form the slots. In Fig. 6 the fins 15 are swung about pivots 34 to extended position by a spring-pressed cone 36 when a pin 21 is withdrawn and are held locked in extended position by the cone. Springs 38 hold the fins in the retracted position. The spring 20 may be spiral. The member 36 may be a pyramid.
