Abstract

High tenacity, low elongation viscose rayon threads or yarns suitable as reinforcing elements in tyres, hose, belting and the like, are obtained by withdrawing at a uniform speed freshly spun highly stretched viscose threads in the acid condition from a plurality of adjacently mounted packages and passing them before drying in closely-spaced parallel relationship through washing, after - treating and finishing baths, simultaneously stretching and drying <PICT:0577580/IV/1> them, the stretch being applied by means of a plurality of thread propulsion surfaces and collecting the dried finished threads in parallel relationship on a common beam. The initial packages may comprise freshly spun and coagulated viscose thread, highly stretched in the two-bath spinning process and collected on a bobbin or in a centrifugal bucket. A plurality of packages of viscose threads 1 in the acid condition are unwound and treated in parallel relationship in a series of baths 6, which may comprise washing liquids such as water or dilute acid and desulphurizing, rewashing and finishing fluids, and then in an oil-emulsion finishing bath 8. An assembly of rollers 10 prevents the threads from slipping as they are led from the bath 8 to a slasher unit comprising a plurality of tensioning and drying rollers 11 which may be steam heated. The peripheral speed of the first roller of the slasher is greater than that of the roller assembly 10, so that stretching of the threads is effected as drying commences. The threads are further tensioned by roller assembly 13 rotating at a higher peripheral speed than the rollers of the slasher unit, and finally collected on beam 14.
