Abstract
A terpene resin is made by bringing a turpentine liquid containing a higher proportion of b -pinene than is contained in any turpentine as originally produced, with agitation and under heat-abstracting conditions, into contact with a polyvalent metal halide which is capable of hydrolysis by water to give an acid reaction, e.g. aluminium chloride, stannic chloride, antimony pentachloride or ferric chloride. b -Pinene may be isolated from gum spirits of turpentine by fractionation and polymerized at 30-40 DEG C., if desired, in the presence of an inert hydrocarbon diluent such as mineral spirits. The reaction is stopped by addition of dilute hydrochloric acid and the catalyst in the water layer separated. The solvent and heavy oil are distilled off to leave the solid resin. Alternatively, gum spirits of turpentine are enriched with b -pinene and similarly treated.
