Abstract

576,971. Purifying water. PERMUTIT CO., Ltd., PEMBERTON, R. T., and HOLMES, E. L. Jan. 8, 1942, Nos. 322, 842 and 5838. [Class 46] [Also in Group III] Synthetic inorganic ion exchange silicates having exchangeable silver or barium ions are prepared for use in the treatment of sea water to render it potable by dehydrating the granular material until it resembles dry sand. Silver containing silicate is dehydrated at above 100‹C. preferably at above 150‹; barium containing silicate is heated to 60‹-80‹ and not above 100‹. The exchange bodies are obtained by treating exchange silicates such as sodiumaluminium silicates with salts sach as silver nitrate or barium chloride. In treating sea water with the exchange bodies a filter bed may be made up employing both substances in layers or the water may be shaken with a mixture of the bodies.
