576,887. Riveting. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. May 8, 1944, No. 8718. Convention date, March 29, 1943. [Class 83 (iv)] A riveting-machine has two spaced riveting- heads, the distance between which is adjusted automatically according to the width of work between them. The machine is particularly suitable for use on aeroplane wing spars in which a web plate 11 of varying width has angle bars 12, 13 riveted along each edge. The parts with rivets inserted are guided by a fixed anvil 59 in conjunction with a roller 37. A roller 36 on a switch 35 contacts the other edge and controls a motor driving screws 27, 28 to traverse a movable riveting-head and anvil 29 in accordance with the width of the. spar. Lugs 42 on the riveting-heads are guided on bars 43 carried by the frame and the heads are actuated by hydraulic rams 58. The work is supported on rollers 44 to permit movement over the riveting-punches 45. Clamping plates 21 held in advance of the punches by springs 48 also act through rods 49 to operate stroke limit switches carried by plates 53 adjustably mounted on the punch heads.
