Abstract
576,628. Valves. CURTIS PUMP CO. July 6, 1943, No. 10956. Convention date, March 6, 1943. [Class 135] A selector valve comprising inlet and outlet ports with a pivotal valve closure to control the fluid flow is provided with two relatively displaced cams, the first of which acts on the closure member to open it and the second of which acts on the closure member to hold it seated after the first cam has moved away. In an embodiment, the valve comprises a casing 11 provided with a number of inlets 15, each of which may communicate with a separate fuel tank, and an outlet 14 leading to an engine, and each inlet can be closed by a separate valve head 30 carried by a lever 26 pivoted at 27 to ears depending from the top of the casing. The lever 26 is formed from a channel-shaped metal strip of which the upper end is acted on by a spring 25 pressing the valve head into obturating position. A rotatable spindle 19 carries cams 35, 37 so formed that, while cam 35 presses on the upper end of one or more levers 26 to raise the valve heads and to open the corresponding inlets, cam 37 presses on the lower ends of all the other levers to ensure that the corresponding inlets are maintained closed. The cams are held against rotation on the shaft by pins 36, 38. The lower end of the spindle rotates in a cup 18 supported on a spider 17 carried by the casing. Leakage past the upper end of the spindle is prevented by packing 21 held in by a spring 22 which is compressed by a U-shaped wire 23 passing through holes in the walls of an upstanding part of the casing. The levers 26 are stamped with a boss at the upper end which seats in a recess in the cam 35 to provide definite settings for the spindle. A valve head comprises a disc of plastic material with ears 30b carrying a cotter-pin which passes through slots 28 in the flanges of the lever 26 to pivot the valve head with a slight play. Leaf springs 34 press the valve head away from the lever 26, and the obturating face of the valve head carries a synthetic rubber-impregnated fabric washer 31 held on by a metal spring washer 32 and cotterpin 33. In a modification, a dummy lever is provided in place of one inlet so that the valve has an " off " positive in which all the inlets will be closed.
