[Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A mounting for a unidirectionally conducting crystal comprises a first conducting member having a recess in which the crystal is located in electrical contact therewith, a conductor extending into said recess in contact with a sensitive area of said crystal, and insulating material for retaining said conductor in contact with said crystal, and a second conducting member extending about and insulated from said first conducting member. As shown in Fig. 1, the unidirectionally conducting crystal 7 is forced into a cylindrical bore in a conducting body 1 and the bore is filled with a thermoplastic insulating material 3 such as polystyrene. A co-operating contact point 11 formed of the eccentric flattened end of a metal tube 9 is placed in position while the material 3 is still fluid and is moved until a sensitive spot is found, in which position the material 3 is allowed to cool, thus sealing the contact in the adjusted position. The body 1 is formed with a nipple 31 for engagement with an inner conductor 42 of a concentric line, another portion 41 of the inner conductor engaging the conducting tube 9. A tubular member 35 is provided with unions 37 for connection to the two parts of the outer conductor of the concentric line. The body 1 is arranged by means of a layer of insulating tape 33 to be a taper fit in the member 35 and this forms a byepass condenser for the waves to be detected. A method of testing the crystal for a sensitive spot while the insulating material is still fluid is also described (Fig. 3, not shown). In this arrangement, a suitable alternating current is passed through the crystal and the detected output compared with the input by means of a cathoderay tube. The electrode 9 is manipulated until the desired kind of trace is secured and is then clamped in this position until the material 3 has solidified.
