Abstract

575,721. Cooling lubricating oil. MORRIS DIOTORS, Ltd., BROWN, T., and THOMAS, W. J. March 31, 1944, No. 6034. [Class 64 (iii)] In an internal combustion engine with a lubricating oil sump b associated with its base, a water-cooled surface d or surfaces is located in the path through which the oil drips or flows before reaching the sump. The inclined surface d is formed on a hollow ledge c with an inlet f from the engine radiator and an outlet g to the cylinder jacket. A pipe i connecting the inlet f to the outlet h from the cylinder jacket forms a thermostatically controlled by-pass to short-circuit the radiator when the engine is started, so that water heated by the engine can be passed through the ledge c initially to warm the oil.
