Abstract
575,588. Diamond &c. tools. MOPPES, L. E. VAN, MOPPES, E. M. VAN, GODKIN, R., and SMITH, N. R. March 28, 1944, No. 5715. [Classes 60 and 124] [Also in Groups II, V and XXII] In a diamond or like tool, a diamond is partially surrounded by, or diamond particles are included in, a mass of two or more powdered metals with substantially differing melting points, which mass is heated to sinter the lower melting point metal, and simultaneously relative displacement is caused between the mass and a recessed stem or back plate to consolidate the mass and braze it to the surfaces of the recess. The higher melting point metal and the diamond or diamond particles may be coated with the lower melting point metal, or the latter may be in bar form and the heating continued to melt it so that it flows into the interstices of the higher melting point metal. The heat may be applied by gas burners, or electric resistance welding or high frequency heating may be used. The Fig. shows a diamond 3 in a hole 2 in a block 1, a moulding space 6 being formed by a removable sleeve 5 and a recess 8 in the end of a stem 7 which is pressed into the sleeve by means of a slide block 10. The interior surfaces of the recess 8 and sleeve 5 may be coated previously with flux and graphite, respectively. The application of the invention to a diamondimpregnated abrading wheel also is described and illustrated in the Specification.
