Abstract

575,519. Suspension bridges. ELGIN & KINCARDINE, EARL OF. Feb. 21, 1944, No. 3213. [Class 20 (i)] The deck structure of a suspension bridge comprises a continuous closed box member, the sides of which are curved to reduce the effect of wind acting on the structure. The box structure may comprise main longitudinal shear members 1, 2, Fig. 1, with semi-circular sides 3, deck plating 4 and bottom plating 5. Continuous longitudinal stringers 9, 11, to which the deck and bottom plating are secured, are connected to cross-girders 10. The semi-circular sides 3, Fig. 4, are carried by stiffeners 13 from frame members 12 which are braced by members 14. The box structure is carried by suspenders 8 from the main cables 8'. Intermediate longitudinal shear members and suspension cables may be provided where dual roadways are to be accommodated. The interior of the box structure may be formed as a tunnel for rail traffic.
