[Class 83 (iv)] A machine for soldering the tagger lids on tinplate containers comprising a rotatable work table and a support on which is mounted a swivelling arm carrying a soldering iron in such a position that the bit traverses round the edge of the lid when the turntable is rotated and also means for supplying solder to the bit, has near the top of the support a lever carrying a weight serving to hold the lid in position on the container, the lever having springs for maintaining the weight in raised position after lifting it from the lid. The container 4 is placed on a table 3 rotated by belt and gearing from a motor 18. On the base is mounted a pillar 16 on which is mounted a collar carrying a compound arm 7, 9, connected by swivel joints, the arm 9 carrying the soldering-iron 8 and being provided with a handle 11 so that it may be brought over the lid of the container. Near the handle is pivoted a trigger 10 which, through a Bowden cable 13, brings a slotted tube 14 through which solder wire passes against a positively rotated serrated wheel 15 so as to feed the solder to the bit through a flexible tube 12. The container is held on the table by a weight 5 carried by a lever 6 which may be held in raised position by springs 20 operating more or less over the dead centre so that the full effect of the weight is available for keeping the lid in position during operation. The soldering-iron may be electric or gas-heated and the trigger may be arranged to turn the wheel 15 by a pawl-and-ratchet, the tube 14 being permanently fixed in position close to the wheel. The wheel and tube in this case may be mounted on the arm 9.
