Abstract

573,972. Machinery guards. BISHOP, W. H. May 4, 1944, No. 8476. [Class 80 (iv)] A guard for drilling and like machines comprises a sleeve part in the form of a plain sheet metal cylinder or tube a having at its upper end a split clamp b adapted to be fixed on the lower end of the stationary part c through which the rotating spindle passes. A collar d welded or otherwise secured to the lower end carries diametrically opposed slotted brackets e in which are hingedly mounted lugs f secured to the upper ends of two half-shells g forming the lower part of the guard. Each half-shell comprises a semi-cylindrical upper and a semiconical lower portion. Spring clips j on one half-shell are adapted to snap into openings h in the other half to hold them in the closed position in which they surround the chuck and' upper part of the drill or other tool k. The hinges of the two half-shells are preferably so spring-loaded that, when the clips are released, the half-shells swing outwardly and upwardly. The sleeve part a may be telescopic.
