Abstract

573,954. Stabilizing ships. DENNY & BROS., Ltd., W., ALLAN, J. F., and BROWN BROS., & CO., Ltd. Jan. 11, 1943, No. 513. [Class 113 (ii)] In roll-stabilizing apparatus for ships comprising fins which are projectable laterally from the sides of the hull, one or more groups of superposed fins are arranged on each side of the hull. The fins of each group may be staggered in zig-zag or echelon formation and they are linked together for simultaneous tilting about athwartship axes by a single electric or hydraulic power mechanism under the control of one or more gyroscopes. In the form shown, the fins 1 project through slots 2 in the shell plating and are carried by shafts 3 with outer bearings 4 sliding in guides 9 in boxes 10. The shafts 3 extend through inner bearings 5 to bearings 7 on a cross-head 8 which is connected to a shaft 11 with a piston working in a fin-projecting cylinder 12, and which has slippers engaging in guides 13. The shafts 3 also carry arms 6 connected by a link 20 which is connected by a lever 18 feathered on a fin-tilting shaft 15 carrying a lever 14 in engagement with a hydraulic control ram 17.
