Abstract

573,815. Fractionating and hydrogenating fatty oils. ABBEY, A. (Armour & Co.). Jan. 28, 1943, No. 1497. [Classes 32 and 91] In the hydrogenation of mixtures of fatty acids containing unsaturated constituents, substances retarding the hydrogenation reaction are removed by fractionating the fatty acid mixture to remove .a volatile low bo:ling fraction and a residual high boiling fract:on and hydrogenating the intermediate fractions only. Black cotton seed fatty acid stock is fractionated into four fractions of boiling ranges (1) 320 330‹F. under 5mm. pressure (2) 450-460 F. under 18mm. pressure (3) 460-470‹F. under 53mm. pressure (4) 480-495‹F. under 18mm. pressure. Fractions (2) and (3) are then hydrogenated. In a similar manner fractions comprising substantially linoleic and oleic acids may be isolated and hydrogenated to stearic acid. The stock is passed through a preheater 11 into a tower 12 into which superheated steam is injected through line 16. The undesired top and bottom fractions are removed through lines 15, 17 while an intermediate fraction is fed to a side stripper 18 and thence to the hydrogenation unit 24.
