573,364. Fuel oils. ARNOLD, J. C. (Standard Oil Development Co.) June 30, 1944, No. 12472. [Class 91] The cloud point of compression-ignition fuels, e.g., Diesel oil, is lowered by the addition of 1-20 per cent. of soluble polyacrylic esters, enabling high-ignition value fuels to be used at low temperatures without causing clogging of the fuel line filters, and without lowering the cetane value of the fuels. These polymers, or co-polymers, are obtained by known processes from acrylic esters having the general formula CH2=C(X)-COOR. where R is a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic, aromatic or hydroaromatic group, preferably containing at least 10 carbon atoms of which preferably at least 4 are aliphatic, and where X is hydrogen, halogen, or a methyl or ethyl radicle. Preferred esters are of the type where X is a methyl radicle, and R is a monohydroxy aliphatic alcohol having 4-12 carbon atoms, e.g., lauryl methacrylate. The soluble polymers produced normally have Mol. Wts. in the range 7,000-15,000. The invention is applicable to low pour point base stocks, e.g., hydrogenated naphthenic gas oils or raffinates from solvent extraction &c. which generally have cloud points considerably higher than their pour points. It is of particular advantage for use with base stocks having a cloud point above 0‹F., or paraffinic Diesel fuel base stocks normally having a cloud point above -10‹F. Sufficient esters may be used to reduce the cloud point to below -40‹F. It is stated that these polyacrylic esters have been used to lower the pour point of lubricating oils.
