Abstract
572,812. Fire-extinguishing sprinklers. BURNHAM, T. W. May 24, 1943, No. 8231. [Class 47 (ii)] A nozzle having opposing apertures through which jets which impinge on one another may issue is interposed between the water supply pipe and a conventional sprinkler head, the arrangement being such that on release of a fusible link on the sprinkler head a valve supplying the nozzle is opened and the valve which permits water to be supplied to the sprinkler head in the conventional arrangement is simultaneously closed. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a nozzle 14 with opposed pairs of openings 20 is screwed at 17 into a water supply pipe 1 in place of a sprinkler head 3 which is screwed into the upper end of the nozzle 14. A strainer device 18 is secured in the supply pipe 1 to prevent clogging of the holes of the nozzle 14. On fusion of a strut 12 of the sprinkler head 3, water pressure pushes the valve member 26 off its seating and forces a valve F attached to the valve 26 by a stem 28 against the valve seating in the sprinkler head 3. In addition to the openings 20, other openings 22, 23 may be provided. In a modification, the valve 14 may be secured in a pendant or other position to the leg of a T-piece, the limbs being secured respectively to the water supply pipe and sprinkler head.
