Abstract
In the catalytic isomerization of normal paraffin hydrocarbons such as butane and pentane using hydrogen chloride as catalyst promoter, the hydrogen chloride is recovered from the reaction product by contacting the latter with an anhydrous sulphate of copper, zinc, cadmium or mercury, and decomposing the resulting addition product by heat treatment. Advantageously, the hydrocarbon stream containing hydrogen chloride issuing from the isomerization reactor is passed through a column of the metallic sulphate, and when absorption of the hydrogen chloride is complete, the stream is diverted to a second tower containing fresh sulphate, whilst the hydrogen chloride is recovered from the first tower by passing a hydrocarbon feed of normal paraffin therethrough at an elevated temperature. The sulphate may be mounted on an inert carrier such as carbon or silica gel. Examples are given.
