Abstract

572,491. Vitreous enamel insulation. SHEPHERD, G. R. (Westinghouse Electric International Co.). Jan. 25, 1944, No. 1399. [Class 56] [Also in Group XXXV] A method of treating ferrous silicon magnetic material to produce an electrical insulating surface film comprises applying a refractory coating composition to the surface of the unoxidized sheet, the composition of the coating comprising magnesium oxide, silica and an oxidizing agent, and heat treating at a temperature of 1150‹ C. to 1300‹ C: The oxidizing agent produces an oxide film on the metal which reacts with the coating composition to form a tenaciously adherent insulating glaze. As shown, the metal sheet passes between rolls 12 where the coating in the form of a suspension in water is applied to the upper and lower surfaces, between rolls 22 which adjust the thickness of the coating, through a drier 24, to a furnace 26 where the metal is annealed and glaze formation takes place. Brushes 28 remove any excess coating material. The glaze 62, Fig. 2, is formed only closely adjacent to the surface of the metal 60 ; the remainder of the coating 64 acting as a refractory separator. The coating has the composition 2-10 per cent silica, 2-10 per cent of the carbonate or hydroxide of an alkaline earth metal and the remainder magnesia. The insulated material is then slit at the cutters 30, wound to form a transformer core 34 on a mandrel 32, strain annealed in a furnace 38 and impregnated with a thermoplastic material of the polyvinyl acetate type as described in Specification 553,864, [Group XXXV]. The impregnated core may then be cut into sections by a saw 44 and any burrs removed by a grinding-wheel 48 followed finally by an acid etch.
