571,929. Softening water. PERMUTIT CO., Ltd., PRESCOTT, W. G. AKEROYD, E. I., and HOLMES, E. L. Nov. 12, 1943, No. 18870. [Class 46] In a process for softening water by means of lime with or without soda, in which the water is caused to flow upwardly through a mass of particles consisting of or coated with calcium carbonate at a speed high enough to maintain the mass in suspension, a small amount of a compound which on dissolving in the water introduces PO4, ions into the water is added not later than the lime, or lime and soda. The compound may be for example, orthophoshoric acid, or an alkali or ammonium salt of orthophosphoric acid. The invention is described as applied to the treatment of chalk well water in plant described in Specifications 522,430 and 534,245, the compounds used being respectively, crystalline disodium hydrogen phosphate and anhydrous trisodium phosphate.
