[Class 37] Granular material is sorted according to its moisture content by feeding a stream of granular material of predetermined cross-section, subjecting it to a compressing action to obtain a constant packing factor, and causing the compressed material to pass between electrodes arranged in a circuit so that variation in the moisture content causes the actuation of means by which the material is delivered to a plurality of points according to its moisture content. The spout 3 of a hopper 2 is provided with a slide 4 adapted to regulate the rate at which the granular material is delivered to the surface of a conveying drum 5. This is encircled by a copper or brass plate engaged by a brush 7 connected to an oscillator 8. The drum 5 is secured to a shaft 10 which also carries two grooved pulleys 11, one of which is engaged by a belt 12 driven by a motor 14. The other pulley 11 is connected by a crossed belt 15 with a pulley 16 by which a roller 17 is driven at the same surface speed as the drum. The roller 17 compresses the material issuing from the hopper and supported by the drum while leaving it free laterally in order to obtain a constant packing factor for the granular material, which then passes below an electrode 20. This electrode is connected through a rectifier 22 to an amplifier 23, the output of which is connected to a relay 26 by means of which a hinged flap is moved between two positions so as to direct material from a shoot 43 into one or other of two shoots 44, 44a according to whether its moisture content is above or below a predetermined value.
