[Class 31 (i)] [Also in Group V] In the formation of shaped rubber, &c., articles by a cutting process the material being operated upon is subjected to a compressing operation in a direction parallel to the movements of the cutting-tool so as to modify the shape of the article produced. In Fig. 2 a cutting-out die 2, which when forced through a sheet 1 of material would produce a cylindrical disc, is combined with a plunger 3 which compresses the rubber, &c., as at 4, Fig. 2, so as to produce a disc with a flared edge 8, Fig. 3. In a modification, Fig. 5, the cutter 2 coacts with a support 10 having a recess 11 with rounded edges 12, and a plunger 13 inside the die forces the rubber into the recess 11, and the finished article is similar in shape to that shown in Fig. 3, but with a more pronounced flare. The process can be varied by employing two concentric cutters 2 for producing a flared annular article. In a further modification, Fig. 8, a rod 20 is compressed by a surrounding sleeve 18 in a cylindrical cavity 16 by an annular plunger 19, and the compression of the sleeve 18 is transferred to the end of the rod 20 so as to cause the end 22 to be put under compression and to protrude past a stop 17 where by the action of a skiving knife 2 a disc of rubber is cut off which assumes a concave dish shape.
