Abstract

The water-receptivity, swellability, tensile strength, appearance and affinity for dyestuffs of cellulosic fibres, yarns and fabrics is improved by treating them separately, and in either order, with acrylonitrile and a solution of a strong hydroxide. The process is applicable to cellulosic fibres of all kinds, including regenerated cellulose and natural fibres such as cotton, jute, ramie and flax. Specified strong hydroxides which may be employed are sodium and potassium hydroxide and quaternary ammonium hydroxides, e.g. tetramethyl, tetraethyl, benzyltrimethyl, dibenzyl-dimethyl, tetraethanol and butyl-benzyl-dimethyl ammonium hydroxide. The fibres are treated with acrylonitrile by soaking or dipping, preferably at room temperature, excess liquid is removed, the impregnated fibres soaked in a solution of the strong hydroxide, squeezed or hydro-extracted, washed with water or weak acid and finally dried. The temperature, concentration and time of treatment with the hydroxide solution may be varied according to the effect desired. The fibres may be treated under tension or otherwise. In an example, it is stated that cotton sheeting treated according to the invention is dyed with Brilliant Blue 6BA to give a deeper shade than that obtained by dyeing the material treated with hydroxide solution alone.
