Abstract

571,469. Obtaining cellulosic fibre. KILBURN, B. E. D. (Keys, L. F. W.). April 1, 1943, No. 5218. [Class 96] [Also in Group XXIII] Baobob or other trees are felled, and wood fibre obtained for the production of cellulose, by stripping the bark, and cutting and peeling off wood strips about 1 in. thick and 5 ft. long, as successive layers, from the lower part of the trunk until the tree falls, whereafter the rest of the tree is peeled, and the strips baled. The wood may be hammered to loosen the fibres; it may be washed and beaten in a rotary beater with freely pivotted arms, and may be bleached or dried by the sun. The hammer may comprise a short wooden handle with a head integral therewith and projecting at an acute angle.
