Abstract
571,453. Electric cables. PIRELLIGENERAL CABLE WORKS, Ltd., and BISHOP, J. L. Nov. 29, 1943, No. 19930. [Class 36] Electric cables are insulated by a covering of thermoplastic material and plasticizer which is then heated so as to volatilize the whole or part of the plasticizer. The material consists of polyvinyl chloride, acetal, or formal, acrylic resins or cellulose ethers, whilst the plasticizer may be tricresyl phosphate or dibutyl phthalate. In one example the covered wire is heated for 88 hours to between 100‹ C. and 135‹ C., the loss of plasticizer varying between 35 per oent and 85 per cent. After heat treatment, the cable loses some of its flexibility but it can be operated at much higher temperatures without risk of breakdown, such as in cookers or lighting or ignition systems, and will retain any desired configuration into which it has been formed.
