[Class 144 (ii)] Tyre beads are locked by the thin edges of a laterally stiff but circumferentially flexible band with edges rounded by folding the band closely upon itself at the margins. Air tubes may be dispensed with. The band may consist of several layers of sheet metal floating on each other, and one or more layers may be corrugated or indented. The rim 14, Fig. 2, may consist of a fixed flange 15 having a seat 17 for a removable flange 16 which is secured by bolts 22, the locking of the tyre being effected by the inward pressure of the band or the lateral compression of the rim. The inner faces of the beads 11, 12 may have surface layers 23, 24 of vulcanized soft rubber to act as a sealing gasket, or the edges of the metal band may be covered with metal, plastic or rubber. The band 41 may have outward and inward protuberances 44, 45 and the band may be spaced from the rim by blocks 46 welded or riveted to the band or by forming the parts 45 deep enough. When several superimposed bands are used, they may be of progressively increasing widths outwards to engage the sloping walls of the tyre beads. The bands may be endless or jointed, and in the latter case, the ends are flattened and welded together, the tyre valve stem securing the ends together in an air-tight manner with the aid of rubber gaskets. Several sealing edges may be provided on a single band by accordion pleats 235 ... 240, Fig. 14, formed in the sides of the ring 230. Struts 241, 242 may limit the inward movement of the edges 237, 240 and they may be stiffened by ridges 246. The bridge 231 of the band may be corrugated at 247 so that the air pressure above the band will tend to increase the lateral pressure of the band.
