Abstract

571,062. Coating wire. GENERAL CABLE CORPORATION. Sept. 27, 1943. No. 15842. Convention date, Sept. 10, 1942. [Class 140] Wire is coated with material, such as enamel, supplied from a pool, by passing one or more free strands of the wire through a shallow, elongated stream of the material against the flow of the stream, continuously supplying clean material in excess from the pool to the point where the wire emerges from the stream, and continuously removing and returning to the pool excess material from the other end of the stream. The remaining coating may therafter be hardened. The coating apparatus may include a plate over the surface of which the wire moves, and means for supplying the material so that it flows over said surface. In the apparatus shown, the wire is fed from a spool 20 in parallel loops around lower and upper sets of sheaves 22, 23 and thence to a take-up spool 24. The upwardly-moving strands pass over the surface of a vertical plate 32 which may, if the wire is thick, have grooves to accommodate it, and over said surface there descends from a supply trough 34 a stream of enamel through which the strands pass. The base 40 of plate 32 is curved to direct surplus enamel to a trough 41 from which it is piped to a sump 44 containing a pump 45 for transferring it back by way of a filter 51 to the supply trough 34. The plate 32 may have a removable cover 53 which may be transparent, and the enamel may be kept hot by a heater on the back of the plate or in the sump 44. Excess enamel on the wire after it leaves the coating zone may be removed by a verticallyadjustable wiper 54 comprising a driven roller 55 and a scraper 56 therefore, the excess being piped back to the sump 44. The coated strands pass through an oven 30 between the coating zone and the upper sheaves to harden the enamel. Specification 547,311 is referred to.
