Abstract

571,061. Projecting stereoscopic images. MATTHEWS, F. W. M. Sept. 20, 1943, No. 15422. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group XL] Apparatus for projecting stereoscopic images comprises a projector with means for dividing the right and left eye images into narrow vertical strips and a shutter which renders visible in succession single pairs of these strips, each pair being formed of one right eye and one left eye image strip, together with a projection screen having a waved surface formed of narrow vertical elements inclined alternately in opposite directions to the general plane of the screen, the right and left eye image strips being projected on to screen elements facing respectively to the right and left of the spectator ; whereby, it is stated, each eye has a greater appreciation of the picture elements appropriate to it than of the others, so producing a stereoscopic effect. In the projector shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1 a line screen 5 mounted in the film gate divides the left and right eye images L, R on the film 4 into strip elements, and a shutter 3 is provided with slots 11, 12 which uncover a single pair of elements, one from each image, at a time. The shutter is reciprocated one or more times during the projection of the pair of images so that all the strip elements are projected in pairs in succession on to a screen of the zig-zag form in horizontal section shown in Fig. 8, with or without baffle strips 33. The right-eye strips are projected in succession on the portions A, C, E and the corresponding left-eye strips are similarly projected on the portions B, D, the projection of each pair of strips ceasing before that of the next pair commences owing to the passage of the slots 11, 12 in the shutter over the lines of the screen 5. An adjustable prism system 7, 8, 9, 10 in front of the objective 6 is provided for projecting the right and left eye strips from laterally-spaced points. A television system is referred to in which the right and left eye images are formed on the screen of a television camera in front of which is a line screen corresponding to the screen 5. The two images are simultaneously vertically scanned by two cathode rays spaced apart to correspond with the slots 11, 12 in the shutter 3. The strip image elements of each pair as they are scanned are reconstituted separately on the image screens of two corresponding projection cathode ray tubes and their images are separately projected on to a screen of the same form as that shown in Fig. S.
