Abstract

325,362. Aspden, R. L. Jan. 24, 1929. Television. - In stereoscopic television or telecinematography, the two sets of pictures are presented as a single series and the eyes of the viewer are controlled so that he sees with each eye only the pictures taken from the corresponding viewpoint. In one arrangement the transmitter comprises means d, e, Fig. 1, for producing the two aspects of the scene &c. ; a selector disc a apertured at f and g to present one aspect at a time to a scanning disc b provided with two sets of scanning apertures h, i, one for each aspect and mounted on the same shaft as the disc a; and a lens j and light-sensitive device k. At the receiver (Fig. 2, not shown) the device k is replaced by a lamp and the two eyes of the observer are placed in positions corresponding to the view-producing means d, e. In one modification the device a is dispensed with and the scanning disc has a spiral arrangement of holes covering only half the disc, and scans each picture separately and alternately, two light-sensitive devices being used; in the receiver optical means are provided for inverting one of the images. In a second modification the object is scanned by two travelling light-spots alternately and a single light-sensitive device. In other modifications a cinema film has alternate pictures of different aspects and is geared to the scanning mechanism; a single spiral scanning disc is rotated at double the speed of the selector disc; the number of alternations per revolution is increased; a cathode-ray transmitter and receiver is used with the selector device; the two pictures are reproduced alternately side by side and viewed through the selector disc; the two pictures are reproduced simultaneously and a double selector device, not operated synchronously with the scanning device, alternately presents the two aspects to the appropriate eyes. The selector device may be arranged to act as the shutter of a kinematograph projector. Specification 298,255 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
