Abstract
Raw animal hide or skin is preserved or conditioned after washing, peeling and cleaning, but before tanning, by coating with, or immersing in, a mixture of flour or bran, oil, salt, and the contents of eggs, and then drying. Animal oils, such as neat's foot oil, are preferably used. In an Example, a mixture sufficient to treat 400 kilogrammes of raw dry animal hides or skins is composed of approximately 400 kilogrammes of wheat flour, 500 kilogrammes of salt, 140 kilogrammes of neat's foot oil, and the contents of 40 dozen chicken eggs. Small quantities of sodium bisulphate, aluminium sulphate, alum, and formaldehyde may be added to the mixture.
