Abstract
570,547. Magnetic compasses. LESTER, R.E. Oct. 18, 1943, No. 17100. [Class 97 (ii)] In order to correct for variation and deviation, a magnetic compass, mounted on an aeroplane is provided with a compass scale of elastic or flexible material which is capable of expansion and contraction and means are provided at predetermined points for so expanding and contracting it. A fixed flange 5 having marked thereon the eight cardinal points is provided and around this is mounted in a slightly stretched state an elastic annular compass scale 6 seated upon, and operatively connected with, eight supports 7 arranged to be circumferentially adjusted by screws 9 to expand or contract the compass scale 6 at those parts. A support 13 having a scale 14 is also provided to carry a pointer 12 adjustable by a screw 16 and to act as a variable lubber line. To set the scale, the variation of the district is set on the auxiliary scale 14 by moving the pointer. The aeroplane is headed to true north and the rotating ring is turned to bring the parallel wires 18 parallel to the needle 1 and the support 7 is adjusted to bring the zero of the scale 6 immediately under the pointer 12. The aeroplane is then headed successively to the other cardinal points and the process repeated so that the compass scale is corrected at each of these cardinal points.
