Abstract

570,408. Automatic control systems. DEHN, F. B. (Syncro Machine Co.)..June 15, 1943, No. 9550. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Groups IX and XXII] A winding machine for wire. thread &c. comprises in combination a capstan shaft, a first power means for driving said shaft, a capstan wheel mounted on said shaft, and a winding mechanism including a winder shaft and a second power means for driving it, means for connecting and disconnecting the capstan shaft from its power means, and means for controlling the disconnecting means so that the capstan shaft is not driven by its power source during the decelerating period of the winder shaft. Wire W from the capstan 11 of the driving machine 10 is pulled through the die 9, passes in several turns around the finishing capstan 15, and thence over a wheel 17 carried by an arm 18, pivoted at 19, and furnished with adjustable weights 21 and a dashpot mechanism 22. The shaft 19 moves the motor of an induction regulator 23. The wire is led back over capstan 15, through guide wheels 25 and thence over the traverse wheel 27 to the spool 29. During the normal operation of the machine, the wire supports the roller of a switch 16. But if the wire breaks, the switch 16 is opened, breaking the holding circuit for the main motor controller, to bring the machine to rest. The shaft 12 of the capstan 11 is driven by the main motor of the machine and through a chain 13, drives the shaft 14 of the capstan 15 through a clutch 42, 43. The spool 29 is rotated by a squirrel-cage motor 33 through a magnetic clutch 31, a " zero-speed " switch 38 and a brake 39 being provided on the driven shaft. The control circuits for the machine, Fig. 6, are shown in the de-energized position. The switch 51 is first closed, thus energizing from the 3-phase supply 50 the primary of the transformer 53, the winding 82 of the magnetic clutch and the motor 33, the initial current in the winding 82 being of such low value, however, that the spool is not rotated. The wire-drawing machine drive is set in motion by a switch which completes the holding circuit 89, 92, to close switch 60 which energizes the main timer 58. The relay winding 69 is also energized through switch 57, so that switches 69a, b, c are closed and 69d opened. The opening of switch 69d de-energizes the capstan timer 64, while the closing of switch 69c shorts a portion of the resistance 84 previously in circuit, thus increasing the current in winding 82. The closing of switch 69b completes the circuit to the winding 40, thus releasing the brake 39 on the winding shaft to permit winding to commence. The closing of switch 69a shorts the " zero-speed " switch 38 which normally operates to prevent the spindle speed dropping below a predetermined value. The de-energizing of the capstan timer 64 opens switch 64a to de-energize the relay 55, thus opening the switch 66 which de-energizes the solenoid 48 allowing the clutch 42 to close and the shaft of the capstan 15 to be driven from the main motor drive through chain 13. When the final contactor of the main motor drive closes, the switch 88 is opened, resistance 86 is brought into circuit so that the clutch 82, under the control of the voltage regulator 23, receives its normal running current. If the tension in the wire W varies, the rotor of the regulator 23 will be turned by the oscillation of the arm 18 so as to vary the current induced from the field to vary the value of the current in the winding 82. By this means the tension in the wire W is maintained substantially constant. The machine will now run normally until the spool is loaded when the main timer 58 will operate to stop the machine as follows : switch 57 will open, thus breaking the relay circuit 69. This allows the switch 69a to close and switches 69a, band c to open. The closing of switch 69d energizes the capstan time 64, completes the relay circuit 55<SP>1</SP>, closes the switch 66, energizes the solenoid 48 and disconnects the clutch 42, thus stopping the capstan 15. The opening of switch 69a takes the short off the `' zero-speed " switch 38, while the opening switch 69b breaks the circuit to winding 40, allowing the brake to be applied to the winding shaft and the spring of the switch 69c removes the shunt off resistance 84 and reduces the current in the magnetic clutch winding 82. With the operation of these switches 69a-d, the main motor is controlled by switch 38 and the winding shaft slows down and then stops, switch 38 thus opens and the main controller circuit is broken, thus de-energizing the main motor and its controls. Switch 60 then opens and the main timer 58 is de-energized, while switch 88 closes, shunting the resistance 86 and reducing the current in the magnetic clutch winding 82 to the stand-by valve. The capstan timer 64 thus de-energizes the relay 55<SP>1</SP>, opening the switch 66 and de-energizing the solenoid 48 to allow the spring-urged clutch element 42 to be engaged so that the capstan 15 and thus the whole machine which is at rest, is reset for another winding operation. An operator's switch 77 is included so that the brake 40 may be applied, at will if required.
