[Class 87 (ii)] In a press of the type having two mould rolls, each with mould recesses in the periphery thereof, the drive to the rolls is split and delivered independently to each of the two rolls, and either of the split portions of the drive has incorporated therein means by which, without removing any of the components, the drive or drives may be temporarily disconnected for the purpose of bringing the mould recesses into accurate registration by rotating one of the rolls independently of the other. Fig. 1 is a plan view of a machine in which each roll 12 is driven from a variable speed shaft 3 by connections including a worm gear 7, a chain wheel or pulley 6 which is common to both worm gears, and a chain or belt 5. Three methods of disconnecting the worm gears are described, in each of which the wheel 6 is, in effect, in two disconnectable parts. In one method, Fig. 3, the worm spindles 19, 20 have keyed thereon flanges 17, 18, which are clamped to a central chain wheel 21 by set-screws 22, 23. The flange 18 has arcuate slots 24 which receive the set-screws 23. In order to adjust the rolls, the set-screws 23 are loosened, thus disconnecting the worm spindle 20 from the wheel 21. The shaft 3 is then turned by means of a hand wheel 8, the spindle 19 and left-hand roll 12 being thus turned, whilst the spindle 20 and righthand roll remain stationary. In the two other methods of disconnection, a free-wheel roller or ball clutch and a free-wheel ratchet device are employed. Fig. 2 shows an alternative drive utilizing bevel wheels 14 to turn the worm spindles. A bevel wheel may be put out of action by unclamping it from a sleeve keyed to a worm spindle, or (Fig. 7) the lock-nuts 47 may be loosened, whereupon by rotating the screw cap 46 the bevel wheet 43 is forced to slide along the key 44 of the worm spindle 45 out of mesh with the bevel pinion.
