Abstract

Means for securing the controlled dissemination of gaseous ammonia into confined spaces, e.g., factories or store-rooms, consists of a compressed block composed of an intimate mixture of a solid substance, or a mixture of solid substances adapted to evolve ammonia under normal conditions of temperature and humidity and a further non-ammoniacal substance which gradually crumbles, effloresces or otherwise disintegrates when exposed to air. The ammonia-evolving substance may be normal ammonium carbonate and the efflorescing substance, crystalline sodium carbonate decahydrate. The compressed mixture may also contain a proportion of a substance adapted to accelerate or catalyse the evolution of ammonia. e.g., ammonium carbamate. Pressures of 250-600 pounds per square inch may be used in making the block.
