[Class 1 (i)] A metal 'halide catalyst for Friedel-Crafts reactions is mounted on a porous carrier which has been treated to convert polyvalent metal compounds therein to those of the highest state of valency. For example, bauxite may be heated in air to 800-1500‹ F. to convert its iron content to the ferric state before being impregnated with aluminium chloride.
