Abstract
559,681. Catalysts. SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO. April 9, 1942, No. 4665. Convention date, April, 22, 1941. [Class 1 (i)] A supported aluminium halide catalyst is prepared by contacting a solid, adsorptive, inorganic carrier containing 2-10 per cent. of firmly bound water of hydration with an amount of aluminium halide at least stoichiometrically equivalent to the water, heating above 140‹C. until the evolution of hydrogen halide ceases, then adding further aluminium halide to give a content of 13-28 per cent. of the final product, and heating above 140‹C. till impregnation is complete. The carrier may be a siliceous or aluminous material, particularly an adsorptive alumina such as activated bauxite.
