Abstract
569,959. Water-softening plant. PERMUTIT CO., Ltd., and STEVENS, H. D. W. Sept. 10, 1943, No. 14897. [Class 46] In a water-softening plant with hydrogenion and acid exchange materials in two separate chambers the successive stages in the regeneration cycle, namely backwashing, regenerating, rinsing, in each of the two chambers, are effected under the control of a single multiport valve comprising a casing, a valve body formed with ports and passages, and rotary plate (slide) formed 'with two transfer slots whereby ports in the valve body are successively interconnected to effect the connections necessary for the flows required in the successive stages of regeneration as the rotary plate (slide) is' turned a complete revolution. The ports and passages are lined with acid-resistant material such as ebonite and the rates of 'flow may be regulated by screw throttle plugs in appropriate passages. Fig. 3 shows the valve in sectional elevation, Fig. 4 is a plan showing a port plate 24 fixed to the valve body 21, the latter being shown in plan Fig. 5 and under-plan Fig. 6, while Fig. 9 shows the rotary plate (slide) in diagram form in the A position in which the raw water is being treated to remove the dissolved mineral salts. The rotary plate (slide) 26 is of ebonite with a cast-iron backing 27 and its spindle 32 is operated by worm gearing 36 ; the spindle carries an indicator plate 39 with markings A-G to show against a window 40. The port plate 24 has four circles of ports, namely, an outer (fourth)' circle 56-64 and adjacent thereto a third circle of staggered ports 52-55, a second circle of ports 45-51 and a first circle comprising an arcuate port 42 and ports 44, 43. Certain of the fourth and third circles of ports are at times bridged by a slot 66 on the underside of the rotary slide 26 arranged non-radially and similarly certain of the fourth and second circles of ports are at times bridged by a radical slot 65. The ports of the first circle are at'times opened to raw water which enters 'by pipe 9 to a space above the rotary slide 26 and passes through a port 41 in such slide. The port plate 24 is secured to the top of the valve body 21 which has various cavaties and passageways and which has on its bottom a bottom plate 22, Fig. 7, with ports 84, 85 leading to the top and bottom of the hydrogen-ion exchange material and ports 86, 87 leading to the top and bottom of the acid-removal exchange material. In the A position of the slide 26 the raw water passes by port 41 in the slide, arcuate slot 42 .in the port plate 24, cavity 761 and passage 76 in the valve body 21, port 84 in the bottom plate 22, down through 'the hydrogen-ion exchange material and thence to port 85 in the bottom plate 22, passage 75 and cavity 751 in the valve body 21, port 49 in the port plate 24, slot 65 on the underside of the slide 26, port 62 in the port plate 24, passage 72 and cavity 185 in the valve body 21, port 86 in the bottom plate 22, down through the acidremoval exchange material and thence to port 87 in the bottom pLate 22, cavity 184 and passage 68 in valve body 21, port 57 in port plate 24, slot 66 on underside of slide 26, port 53 in port plate 24, passages 79, 88 in valve body 21 to soft-water service pipe 10. When regeneration is to be effected the slide 26 is moved successively to positions B-G in which the following actions are carried out: backwashing of the acid-removal exchange material; regeneration of the acid-removal material by the direct feeding to such material of soda solution drawn in by ejector action of water coming from the hydrogen-ion exchange material; backwashing of the hydrogen-ion exchange material; regeneration of the hydrogen-ion exchange material by the direct feeding to such material of acid drawn in by ejector action of raw water ; rinsing of the hydrogen-ion exchange material; rinsing of the acid-removal exchange material. During the steps of the regeneration cycle the water is passed to a drain 82 provided on the valve casing.
