Abstract

569,547. Supply systems for X-ray apparatus. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). Nov. 1, 1943, No. 18002. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] The anode 13 of an X-ray generator 17 is heated electrically for an interval after the tube has been producing X-rays for a short limited exposure interval in order to retard cooling of the anode to prevent it cracking. The tube 17 is provided with current by a transformer 21 through rectifiers 19. The transformer 21 is connected to an autotransformer 31 across the mains 33 by a switch 29. The latter is operated by a solenoid 35 controlled by a time switch 39 and operating switch 41. The anode heating may be effected by an inserted heating element, but preferably as shown is effected by operating the tube at a potential too low to generate X-rays. This is effected by a switch 43 which connects transformer 21 to the autotransformer 31 through a resistance 45. Switch 43 is operated by a solenoid 47 controlled by a time delay switch 51. This latter requires a longer period to open than switch 39 and thus the tube is operated for a fixed period at a lower voltage after the period of full operation.
