Abstract

569,492. Vehicle wheel suspensions. AUSTIN MOTOR CO.. Ltd., and HAEFELI, J. C. June 19, 1943, No. 9906. [Class 108 (ii)] In an independent wheel suspension for a road vehicle a stub-axle or axle-end is carried on a mounting integral with or pivotal about a vertical axis on a spring-supported carrier B, the upper and lower ends b, b<1> of which are connected to the chassis by oppositely-extending, substantially horizontal links D, D<1>, the link connections with the carrier and chassis consisting of horizontal bearings which maintain the carrier in a fixed angular relationship with the chassis. As shown, the chassis-connected ends of the links D, D<1> are each splined to a torsion bar or tube E in turn splined to the interior of a tube F or F<1> rigidly carried at its ends in brackets f or f<1> fixed on the chassis member A. The ends of the links may be pivoted to the brackets, the carrier B then being supported by coiled or other springs placed between the carrier and abutments on the chassis frame. The carrier may be constituted by the swivel axle pin of a steering wheel in which case the ends of the links are connected thereto by universal joints. The bars or tubes E instead of acting as torsion springs may simply support the links and one or more coiled or other springs be incorporated to provide torsional resistance.
