Abstract

568,999. Setting tubular rivets. INDEPENDENT PNEUMATIC TOOL CO. June 29, 1944, No. 12404. Convention date, June 11, 1943. [Class 43] Apparatus for setting tubular rivets having an internal screw-threaded bore comprises a support in which are mounted a spindle, having a screwthreaded outer end by which the threaded portion of the rivet may be engaged and which may be rotated in either direction to engage it with and disengage it from the rivet, and an anvil or reaction member movable relatively to the support and the spindle to upset the rivet. The spindle and anvil are operated independently by two pressure fluid motors, both under the control of a single rotary valve, which is rotatable in successive steps, by a trigger device, to cause the spindle to be rotated to engage the rivet, to cause the rivet to be collapsed or upset and then to cause the spindle to be disengaged. As shown, a spindle 27 having a screw-threaded end 78 for engagement with the screw-threads of the rivet, and an anvil 13 are supported in a casing shaped to be readily held in the hand, the anvil being capable of forward movement to set the rivet under the action of a ben-crank lever 45 pivoted at 42 in lugs 43 in the casing and pivoted by engagement of rollers 52 carried by piston-rod 37 of a reciprocating motor 5 with the cam-shaped underface of the arm 45. The spindle 27 is rotated by a rotary motor 4 through sun - and - planet reducing gearing shown. A single rotary valve 7 supported in the casing is turned step-by-step by a trigger (not shown), to operate both motors 4, 5. An electric lamp 99 is lit by a cell 103, when circuit is completed by forward movement of the anvil, to indicate when the rivet is set. The anvil 13 is held against rotation during use by engagement of forward end 46 of arm 45 in a slot in its rear end, and is adjustably mounted in its support 14 to that the extent to which a rivet may be upset may be controlled. A supply of air is coupled to the tool handle 2 at 9 and lubricating oil is fed from a reservoir 10 into the air stream by a regulator mounted in a recess 11 in a wall inside the handle 2.
