Abstract
568,716. Filters KEY, T. D. Oct. 20, 1943, No. 17277. [Class 46] A sand-bed filter a is provided with a collecting channel d of trough form arranged a short distance above the normal level of ths sand, whereby when the filter is back-washed the wash water flowing to the waste-water drainway b through such channel d induces a flow beneath the edges of such channel, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the impurities lying immediately adjacent to the level of the sand are removed. The walls of the channel d converge to the end remote from the discharge to the waste-water drainway b as shown in the plan view, Fig. 2, whereby the induced flow beneath the edges is made uniform. The channel d may be open at the top where it overlies the sand bed, but the end projecting over the waste-water drainway is of closed box-like form d<1> and is provided with a short discharge pipe e which has a substantial back portion extending into the channel. The water-waste drainway b which has a waste-water outlet g may also serve for the inlet of the raw water to be filtered which enters by an inlet f, rises to enter the channel d and filters through the sand-bed a to the draw-off piping c.
