Abstract

567,573. Filtering. BIBBY & SONS, Ltd., J., and IBISON, A. Oct. 6, 1942, No. 13979. [Class 46] [Also in Group III] Spent adsorbents, such as bleaching clays, earths and carbons, are regenerated by treating with solvents or by burning to extract the adsorbed matter, milling by passage through a grating or roller with the addition of water to form a homogeneous mass, moulding into pellets by pelleting rollers such, for example, as described in Specification 532,694, and activating or revivifying the pellets by passage through a rotary kiln followed by a chemical wash, washing, drying and, if desired, crushing to powder. The milling is carried to a degree such that the moulding into pellets occurs at relatively low pressure, such as 100 to 500 1bs. per square inch, to preserve this porosity of the material ; the size of the pellets is preferably from 3/16 to 3/8 ins. diameter. Referring to the drawing, the pellets pass from the milling and pelleting machine 10, 11, 12 to a dressing machine 16, when the flash or burr is removed, and thence to a rotary dryer 19, preheater 20, to which steam may be supplied by the pipe 25, kiln 26, chemical washer 35, washers 39, and drier 40, from which the material may be discharged in the form of pellets to a bag 43 or delivered to hoppers 42 in which different qualities of material may be collected according to the degree of chemical treatment ; the pellets from any of the hoppers may be ground in the grinding machine 44 and the ground material sorted by cyclone separators 45 and discharged into bags 46.
